Snowy owls are the largest bird in the arctic. Having a circumpolar distribution, they can be found in coastal Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Scandinavia, Russia, and Siberia during the breeding season. During the winter they move further south. With a wingspan of up to 170 cm, they can cover great distances in their hunting grounds of open tundra and lowland grassy meadows. They have predominantly white plumage with brown spots and have crural feathers (feathers that cover the tibial portion of the legs) that extend to the toes to protect from the cold weather. Females tend to be larger and heavier with more markings than the males. Breeding in monogamous pairs, the owls stay together through the breeding season. They are listed on the IUCN Red List as "Least Concern" and are federally protected under the U.S. Migratory Bird Act.
