Red Kangaroo Skull Replica
Macropus rufus. The red kangaroo is the largest of the marsupials and native to dry inland portions of central Australia. Males have red-brown fur and are commonly referred to as boomers. Considerably larger than females, male total body length can reach up to 59 inches (1.5m) with an additional 39 inches (1m) in tail length. Females, referred to as flyers, have blue-grey fur and reach 39 inches (1m) in length with an additional 33 inches (85cm) in tail length. Red kangaroos feed on shrubs, grasses and flowering plants while coalescing in small groups called “mobs” composed of females and young and one or several males. The incredible leaping capability in kangaroos is due to bone morphology and powerful tendons in the hind leg that store elastic energy used in each hop. This is an efficient form of locomotion for this large animal due to little energy expenditure in hopping and speed acceleration compared to an animal of similar size.
This cast is from a large male. 2-part skull (separate cranium & jaw).
