Erethizon dorsatum. The North American porcupine is a large rodent that can be found in the forests of North America and upper Mexico. The porcupine is brown or black in color and covered with quills (modified hairs) that they use to defend themselves against predators. They are nocturnal and they feed on a variety of vegetation, including twigs, berries, and tree bark.
